Understanding the Pelvic Floor: Why It’s the Foundation of Women’s Health

Why Your Pelvic Floor Deserves More Attention (and How to Care for It)

Let’s talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention but truly deserves the spotlight—your pelvic floor.

As women’s health physios, we talk about the pelvic floor every day (literally!), and for good reason. This incredible group of muscles plays a huge role in your everyday comfort, confidence, and wellbeing. Whether you’re exercising, sneezing, lifting a toddler, or growing a tiny human—your pelvic floor is working hard behind the scenes.

So… what exactly is the pelvic floor?

Think of it as a hammock or sling of muscles that sits at the base of your pelvis. It supports your bladder, uterus, and bowel. It helps control your bladder and bowel function, supports your spine, and plays a role in sexual function. It’s small, but powerful—and when it’s not working well, you’ll know about it!

Why it matters more than you think?

Here’s the thing: your pelvic floor is involved in almost everything you do, from breathing and posture to core stability and intimacy. And just like any other muscle group in the body, it needs to be looked after.

A weak or overactive pelvic floor can lead to symptoms like:

  • Urinary leakage (even just a few drops when you cough or laugh!)

  • Pelvic heaviness or a feeling of “dragging” (common in prolapse)

  • Lower back or hip pain

  • Pain with intimacy

  • Difficulty fully emptying your bladder or bowel

Many women think these issues are “just part of getting older” or “what happens after having a baby”—but we’re here to tell you that’s not true. These are common, but they are absolutely not normal, and there’s so much we can do to help.

What can you do?

The first step? Awareness. Knowing where your pelvic floor is and how to activate it properly is key. And spoiler alert—it’s not just about squeezing!

Every woman is different, which means your pelvic floor needs are unique. Some women need to strengthen their pelvic floor, while others may need to relax and release tension (yes, tight pelvic floor muscles are a thing too!).

Working with a women’s health physio can help you understand what’s going on for your body, and create a tailored plan to help you feel stronger, more supported, and confident in your body again

In conclusion…

Your pelvic floor is the foundation of your core, your confidence, and your quality of life. Whether you’re preparing for pregnancy, navigating menopause, managing prolapse or just want to feel more in control of your body—it all starts here.
